The English Patient tells an old story which has been told in many different ways, a "love" story. From the first moments of the movie you know a tragedy is going to happen but there is nothing you can think of to stop it. Everything is the way it should be.
It is about borders, about how we oblige ourselves to respect these borders that we have made. I liked this part(Hana is Canadian) :
Hana: There's a man downstairs. He brought us eggs. He might stay.
Almásy: Why? Can he lay eggs?
Hana: He's Canadian.
Almásy: Why are people so happy when they collide with someone from the same place? What happened in Montreal when you passed a man in the street? Did you invite him to live with you?

I have never seen the whole movie! but seen it in bits and pieces three times!!
That's an interesting point. What is it with people from the same place? Once we saw an Indian couple in Walmart! First they thought we are Indian and said hello but even after we said we are not Indian they started talking and said we should meet and let's exchange phone numbers. I wasn't at all comfortable with this. But at the same time thinking if they were Iranian I would do this and feel happy to have found an Iranian couple.
