be Mirza vaghti masalat hal nemishe har kaari mikoni keh be masalehe fekr nakoni;)
Be Hesam man kamelan khosh'halam keh ye dolate mohafezakare aksariat naioomad sare kaar, to che chize badi dar in mibini? manzuret az the idiot rahbare liberalhaast?
Well being right of center I was rooting for a conservative majority. Anyway still this was a major victory for Harper. I am quoting David Frum:
To win re-election in the midst of the worst financial panic since 1929, with your soldiers taking casualties in a costly war on the other side of the planet, with a recession visibly gathering, and with your local currency dropping against the US dollar - that alone is an achievement. Actually to gain more seats (even if not as many as one might wish): well that's an astounding achievement.
And yes Dion is the idiot.
RE: Ahmad
First of all when you say that Harper makes Ahmadinejad look good, my first temptation is just to ignore you, but then you would get away with the BS you have posted. So here is a response:
About the deficit: since 2007 Harper has cut taxes and the US has gone in the worst financial crisis since the great depression so if the federal government did not have a deficit it would have been strange. The point is about spending promises and entitlement programs that would create a long term imbalance in the budget. The current deficit will be small (meaning as a percentage of the budget or the GDP) and temporary (meaning it will go away when the current recession is over).
About the banks: what he has done is different from what the US does and its scale (even when you take into account the relative size of the two economies) is also smaller.
2 & 4 are related so I answer them at once. Harper is a politician, calling an election is a political decision, ergo political calculations will go into that decision. Now your 4th point is factually incorrect; when Harper called the election he expected a majority and his poll numbers were in the 40s when the financial crisis hit his numbers started to drop. The financial crisis also has hit the GOP pretty hard McCain's poll numbers almost match the Dow. In the current political environment a financial crisis is for the left what a terrorist attack would be for the right. You are right that it was disappointing that Harper did not get a majority but that is directly caused by the financial crisis.
About NDP: I must say that they had the best TV ad campaign and the most populist economic message. What you say (that they increased their seats) is true but one point that went overlooked is that they won six new seats in Ontario (virtually all of their gain in the current election) while their share of popular vote dropped from 19.4% to 16% in that province.
About Dion: the tactic you have described is pretty common. When a new face enters the political arena it takes a while before his/her public image is formed. As soon as Dion became the party leader, Conservatives pictured him as somebody who lacks leadership qualities. Dion did nothing to combat this image and that is one of the reasons why he is an idiot. This political tactic is used by both sides of the political spectrum, a textbook example is what Ted Kennedy did to Reagan's supreme court nominee Robert Bork.
I hope I did not miss anything.
More on Dion, from the front page of The Globe and Mail (Oct. 22nd, Vancouver ed.):
Dion ignored warning about Tory blitz
Liberal Party officials prepared a memo in 2006 warning their incoming new leader to prepare an immediate ad campaign to counter an expected assault from the governing Tories aimed at destabilizing whoever won.
However, Stéphane Dion opted instead to hang onto the bulk of a $4-million war chest he inherited upon taking over the top job, responding to a Tory ad blitz with a limited run of upbeat commercials.
When he announced his decision to step down as Liberal Leader on Monday, Mr. Dion said a Tory onslaught supplemented with substantial amounts of cash helped define him with the public and he never recovered.
But Liberal sources told The Globe and Mail a transition team prepared a booklet for whoever was chosen to head the party recommending several actions, including advertisements aimed at opposing a Tory onslaught. The party had just $4-million in the bank after the leadership campaign.
he Liberals opted to hang on to most of the cash because they feared that they might not be able to raise more if an election were called.
Moreover, at least one senior Dion supporter said that the Leader disallowed advertisements critical of Mr. Harper.
"Positive ads don't move votes," said the supporter. Several Tory commercials in early 2007 questioned Mr. Dion's leadership qualifications, depicting him in a now-iconic shrug, palms up and arms outward.
The Liberals responded with a pair of limited ads, one of which showed him banging a gavel at the end of a conference on the environment.
